Year 6/7 Transition Event
We are in the early stages of planning a Primary Secondary SEND Transitions event on the morning of 19th May at Wodson Park, Ware. The idea at this stage is that the Secondary SENCOs all attend along with as many professionals from ISL, Amwell View Outreach, Rivers and hopefully a SALT. Primary SENCOs would then make appointments with the secondary SENCOs to discuss the children with the most complex needs or those who are likely to find transition to Year 7 challenging, and in particular to think about how primary planning might translate to what is appropriate in secondary schools. The professionals will be available to offer support/guidance as and when it is needed.
Aims of transition event:
- focus on ensuring a smooth transition for those with the most complex SEND needs
- a single meeting to access a range of professionals and specialists in one place
- access advice and support to meet the specific needs of pupils
At this stage we would be really grateful if SENCOs could Save the Date in your diary: 9.30 a.m. – 12.30 p.m. on Tuesday 19th May. More details will follow at our SENCO briefing in November and after Christmas.

ENF Support Network Meetings Autumn 2 2018 PAST EVENTS
Following the success of our first ENF Support Network meetings this half term I am pleased to let you know that dates have now been set for next half term’s meetings. Just to remind you, these sessions are for members of staff who provide 1:1 support for children. We appreciate that many of our schools provide 1:1 support without ENF funding and TAs who support in those situations are also welcome to come along. The TAs are welcome to attend whichever meeting/s that they would find useful.
DSPL3 Annual SENCO Conference PAST EVENT
When:9.00 a.m. – 4.00 p.m. on Friday 19th October.
Where: at Fanham’s Hall, Ware
Rob Long will be challenging our thinking with a day themed on ‘Punished by Rewards’.
Motivating learners to learn remains a key challenge for all school staff. Evidence shows that an over-reliance on rewards and punishments can have the opposite effect to that intended – resulting in a ‘what’s in it for me’ attitude.
This day will explore:
- the problems with rewards and punishments as motivators
- motivation – theory and practice
- extrinsic v. intrinsic motivation
- promoting responsibility and addressing learner needs
- creating the intrinsic classroom
Delegates will understand:
- the problems with mechanistic responses to motivate learners
- the nature and function of motivation in the classroom
- negative influences on motivation, mastery v. helplessness and mindsets
- the role of key learner needs for active classroom involvement
- evidence-based principles and practices for promoting intrinsically motivated learners
The intended outcome for children and young people will be:
- that classrooms are designed to promote intrinsically motivated learners who rely less on extrinsic consequences

Facilitated Solution Circle Sessions Spring Term 2018 PAST EVENT
A solution circle is a group tool for helping people become ‘unstuck’ from a problem or situation by using resources from the people in that group. Each circle follows a set structure and takes just under 30 minutes to complete (see http://www.inclusion.com/ttsolutioncircle.html). When solution circles have been used with SENCos and teachers in the past, they have been found to be an effective tool for moving a situation on through sharing practice and ideas. People who have participated in the group (rather than presented the problem) have also found it beneficial for their own practice.
Educational Psychologists will be facilitating solution circles at the following venues in the spring term for SENCos in DSPL3:
Date | Time | Venue | Facilitator |
Wednesday 17th January | 9:30-11:00 | Thorley Hill SpLD Base | Katy Cole |
Friday 2nd February | 9:30-11:00 | Millfield First School, Buntingford | Katie Paxton |
Monday 12th March | 9:30-11:00 | Venue in Hertford or Ware TBC | Saffron Steele |
SENCos can book onto any session. The maximum number of participants for each session will be 12 and the minimum for a group to work will be 4. To book a place, which will be allocated on a first come first served basis, please email me: dspl3manager@sele.herts.sch.uk
